Geek LoveWe all know what being in love feels like. That fuzzy feeling you get when all you can think about is that one special person. The ways we express love have changed throughout history, and even more so with the advent of new technologies. In recent years, geeks all over the world have shared their ideas and creations for expressing their love in an original way.  From virtual reality to Pokéballs, this article features some of my favourite geek love stories.

If you’re a geek and you’re in love, we’re sure you’ll enjoy this collection.

A virtual proposal

Recently there has been a lot of talk about virtual reality. One of the biggest love stories of 2015 was the virtual proposal.

It was just another day for Kelly Tortorice, whose boyfriend Chandler worked at Valve. She went to Valve’s offices to try out some virtual reality glasses.  “There I was, typical day… on a sunken ship deck; fixing robots; painting three-dimensional fire,” she wrote. “Suddenly, a virtual engagement ring started floating my way.” When she took off the glasses, she saw the ring become a reality.

A drone with a ring

There are all sorts of ways to express your feelings to the one you love: a letter, a message, a ring or even a drone. Don’t believe me? Ask Jason.

Jason Muscat used a drone to fly an engagement ring to his girlfriend when they were together in Alamo Square in San Francisco. With the help of Chris Geiger, photographer and professional drone pilot, he was able to record everything on film.

With lots of videos and photos

Another interesting way of surprising someone is with photos or videos. Nowadays this is made much easier thanks to our smartphones. The next two stories show how it is possible to do something original with these devices.

From 31 July to Christmas 2015, Ryan Smith took photos with his girlfriend Bramley while he held a card reading: “Will you marry me?”. In order not to raise suspicions, he told her the photos were to track the progress of her pregnancy. As she said herself:  ”I had no clue, I was totally oblivious to it all”.

You can see the video Ryan made here:

However, he was not the first to have the idea. Dean Smith set up a special video for his girlfriend Jennifer on her birthday. A video in which he proposed to her over 365 days.

Ideas for gamers

Games are another thing which bring geeks together. They let us experience new worlds, try impossible things, and even meet people who share the same passion.

The childhood of many gamers was marked by a game which has been around for 20 years: Pokémon. If your partner loves Pokémon and you want to surprise them, take a look at this idea:

If you prefer Zelda, here is another excellent idea:

Or why not do like Anthony Pinder and do something original with Lego:

New technologies allow geeks around the world to express their love in an original way. If you have any stories you’d like to share, go ahead!
